      On May 16, 1896, the first ever film screening was held in Russia. It lasted only 10 minutes and consisted of short fragments of documentaries by the Lumiere brothers, which had previously been shown in Paris. The first film screening was held in the Aquarium garden in St. Petersburg, after which the movie was watched in other Russian cities.
   The history of Russian cinema is peculiar. Harsh mores plus the characteristic features of certain political periods have left their mark on Russian cinema. However, it did not prevent the appearance of bright stars, talented filmmakers and their outstanding films in the Russian film industry.
